Bake Sale or Business

This is every savvy momopreneur’s dilemma:
Do I bake those brownies or work on my business?
Connie Millard wrote a blog post about this exact thing recently. When do we spend more time at our kids functions and when is it OK to pick our business instead?
When you are a full-time business owner, you are going to pick your business more often then not. And that’s OK! Even though we are building our businesses around our lifestyle, we still can choose. For me, I was fortunate enough to be able to hand-off “reading time” at my daughter’s school to my husband last spring. It actually turned out to be a HUGE blessing because my husband was offered a full-time teaching job at the school as a result.
But I didn’t always have my husband to hand off those “responsibilities”. So I use a 3 step filter to decide if I participate or not:
- Do I want to go? There are a number of school functions, like field trips, that I just can’t stand. So those are easy to so no to. But there are some events that are the moments in my kids lives–Christmas programs, holiday parades, etc.
- Do I have the time? Even when I want to participate in a school function, is it feasible? I travel a lot for my business because I LOVE to. But sometimes, I miss out on the kids stuff. When this happens, I make sure there is a video camera and someone to take snap-shots. In these cases, we usually have more memories captured then if I was there.
- Will I feel guilty? Actually, this is only a step for me because it is my moment to NOT allow the guilt to filter in. Remember, guilt is a choice. And it does not bring happiness. So choose not to participate in this.
